I have a few pieces in the upcoming debut show at KrowsworK, 'As X Approaches Infinity'. The show is filling out pretty video intensive, which is unusual and exciting. Roll on through this new Oakland art space and peep you some works , including one "from the eyes of a clown-shaman"? Why not!

'AS X APPROACHES INFINITY'
Oakland Art Murmur
Friday, December 4th
6-9pm

KrowsworK gallery
480 23rd Street (at Telegraph)
Oakland, CA

Krowswork inaugurates its program with “As X → ∞” (As X Approaches Infinity),* an exhibition of videos and photographs that explores ideas of the infinite, divinity, and the leap between reason and faith as a natural expression of the mediums themselves. Because they are “reality” based and poised at the intersection of the mechanical and the conceptual, video and photography are uniquely suited to emulate and traverse these philosophical pathways. In “As X → ∞” the artists record their specific engagement with the infinite as either direct references to spiritual or ritualized experiences, abstracted allusions to cosmic forms, or playful, elliptical manifestations of the paradox of attempting the approach at all, affirming Kierkegaard’s belief that “the only thing that can save [man] is the absurd, and this he grasps by faith.”

In the screening room, we will feature a 20-minute looped program of videos ranging from 21 seconds to 4 minutes with works by Usuna & Kristie Alshaibi, Animal Charm, Nate Boyce, Torsten Zenas Burns, Volkan Ergen, Sabine Gruffat, Kaliptus, Jason Livingston, Austin Muller, and Aaron Oldenburg. Though conceived individually, the works are curated to be seen together, presenting a complete meditation on the show’s subject. Visitors to the gallery are welcome to a cup of tea or coffee while they watch. Hundred-year-old oak pews with velvet cushions serve as seating and set the tone for a unique experience.

In the project room are an installation and video by RKDB which explore divination and ritual from the eyes of a clown-shaman. Also on view in the exhibition space is the work of five photographers: Gigi Gatewood, Adam Wier, Paula Catao, Walker Dukes, and Lauren Orchowski, whose works approach infinity from the perspective of the sacred, the profane, the fanciful, the ritualized, and the cosmic, respectively.

*The title is borrowed from an expression in calculus where the value of a function is determined by solving for the limit of the function as x approaches infinity. One might extrapolate that as X Approaches Infinity, the function (art) = ∞, therefore this is not an indeterminate form. It has meaning. Thus, the limit does not exist.

SAY MY NAME
Site-Specific Installation for The EpiscoDisco
Grace Cathedral - San Francisco, CA
08.22.2009

‘Say My Name’ is a lighthearted musing on the material expression of the spiritual, as well as a meditation on the diametric qualities of the physical and divine realms.

The installation seeks to echo/mirror the physical form and intention of Grace Cathedral itself – rich materials, elaborate decoration, and massive scale evoking the presence of God and the emotions of faith (while expressing the power of the church and the wealth of its benefactors) – essential qualities of gothic church architecture. Expounding on the physical form of the cathedral and corresponding church traditions of bejeweled reliquaries, golden Eucharist chalices, and the kissing of popes’ rings, a contemporary manifestation takes shape as a levitating, deity-sized bling piece. ‘Say My Name’ also seeks to explore parallels between the church’s luxuriant expressions of the spiritual & sacred and contemporary material displays of wealth, power, and import evidenced in popular culture.

The letters of the nameplate, YHWH, are the transliteration of the ancient Hebrew Tetragrammaton representing God’s name. The true pronunciation of God’s name has been lost to taboo, time, and translation, but the prevailing interpretation is that YHWH can be extrapolated to ‘Yahweh’, and anglicized to ‘Jehovah’ (further translated by Jay-Z to ‘H to the Izz O, V to the Izz A’ ?).

The July 7x7 sayith: Bertie P. has long been a fixture on the nightlife scene, MCing and DJing parties (Blow Up, Frisco Disco, Boner Party) as his out-of-this-world alter-egos. Four months ago, he became an Episcopal priest. Seriously. But it didn’t stop him from starting another party at his new office—Grace Cathedral. EpiscoDisco brings DJs, drinks and other good stuff into the famed church on the third Saturday night of the month. 1100 California St.
